Who loves a list? We do! Especially when it involves summing up the style from the year, and how great has 2014 been!? So many amazing outfits and even more controversial choices. It’s been fun.
With that in mind we’d like to take this time out to call out our best (and worst) star style of the year. We’re sure this won’t be the first breakdown you’ll read in 2014, and it won’t be the last, so let’s just dive right in there!
FLASHING THE FLESH.
Sigh… It almost seems redundant commenting on Miley’s lack of clothing when she spent the majority of her tour straddling a giant hot dog, but we’re going to say it anyway. PUT SOME CLOTHES ON, young lady!! Her recent Tom Ford outing was composed mainly of straps and that’s just the start of it. Must try harder.
One of our frequent flash offenders: Rihanna. While she obviously has an amazing bod, we think we may have seen rather too much of it this year. Instagram agreed after giving her a famous telling off over her nipple heavy feed which, unsurprisingly, BadgalRiRi did not appreciate! Even so are we the only ones who thought she looked kind of incredible in that naked dress at the CFDA Awards? It’s not every day you have your boobs covered in Swarovski crystals!
HOT: Kendall Jenner.
Remember Kendall’s dress from The Much Music Video Awards? While it caused a bit of controversy (mainly over the question of whether she was wearing any pants) we thought she looked amazing and got the balance just right. If you’re going to turn up with no pants on, make sure you’ve got a decent pair of sleeves!
MORE IS MORE.
COLD: Rita Ora.
Rita, babes, we’ve got to talk. While we’re all for your blossoming career and experimental take on style, we could never condone A. ruffled denim and B. what looks to be some sort of harness underwear. It’s just not going to happen, soz. We would say try harder but that’s the problem. Sometimes a t shirt and NORMAL jeans are fine. Try it.
WARM: Lena Dunham.
We have to admit to being a bit biased when it comes to Girls writer and general lady crush, Lena Dunham. Even so a lot of the time she looks like she hasn’t really thought through what she’s put on before leaving the house. Case and point: the huge Giambattista Valli pink fluff creation she wore to the Emmys. Repeatedly referred to as looking like a loo roll holder, we couldn’t help but sort of love it. Why? Because the girl just doesn’t care!
HOT: Lupita Nyong’o.
While February seems like a loooooong time ago, you might remember it was when the world was in full force Lupita fever! She was all over and everywhere, looking fabulous at the same time. While she stuck with pretty classic gowns, this girl gets full marks for her use of colour. We got the whole rainbow, so much so we’re happy to forget that one misstep with the feathered flapper dress. This time anyway.
COLD: Kim Kardashian.
Having been taken under Kanye’s high fashion wing, Kim has seriously stepped up her game in recent times; now bessies with a whole host of designers, she’s even been on the cover of Vogue forgodssake! In our humble opinion however, we fear she may have hit a wall. We can’t remember the last time she was wearing something other than a crop top and bodycon skirt- seriously. People say if it ain’t broke don’t fix it, but it might be time to ring the changes. And no, that Paper Mag cover doesn’t count.
WARM: Taylor Swift.
Before we even comment on her style, can we just say we HEART 1989! It’s been on hard repeat here at BANK HQ- she just gets us! Anyway, Swifty has been having a good year sartorially speaking. She’s been pretty much dominating the co-ords trend and have you seen her coat game? Nailing it. Even so we could do without the knee high socks. You’re cute, T, but not that cute.
Oh my Lorde; a breath of fresh air in the fashion circuit. No one can tell this girl how and when to dress. In her own words “The stuff that I feel comfortable in, and beautiful and cool and strong in, is different to what this pop star or this indie musician feels comfortable in. I put on a suit and I’m like, ‘I’m a badass!’ And that to me is my daring. But if it happened to be a bra and undies that made me feel that way, why deny yourself that?” Well said!
